Vampire: The Masquerade

Description

All characters are blood-sucking fiends. They all have fangs, and they only come out at night. They will also have assorted other magical attributes, some quite traditional, some new and bizarre. There's a wide choice of vampire stereotypes to base characters on if you wish; the aristocratic count, sleeping in coffins, and writing on parchment; or the leather-clad biker wearing shades and touring strip-joints; or even a the deformed and hideous nosferatu skulking in the sewers. Every twist on the vampire theme is contained within, somewhere.

The Vampire game as intended by White Wolf shows player characters wracked with emotional turmoil, and constantly fighting the slide into depravity and bestiality. In practice, however, most players seem to revel in it. Either approach is valid, and both are really worth playing.

This game works very well, with a dark, gothic setting and constant air of menace. Even the heroes here, are killers and madmen.

Apparently there was a US TV show based on the concepts, called "Kindred: The Embraced". It didn't do too well.

Rulebooks

About £16 for the hardback 2nd edition rulebook "Vampire: The Masquerade". The 2nd edition "Players Guide" is also really a requirement, for £14. All of the other supplements are optional, some better than others. The various clanbooks are for enthusiasts and fans of the particular clans only. The "Players guide to the Sabbat" is good though, as it contains rules for creating a slightly different type of vampire character.

Modules

Lots, although the emphasis is on providing source material for GMs to write their own modules around, rather than on providing a rigidly specific adventure. Costs are around £10.
